GUEST SPEAKER: Thea Colman/Baby Cocktails, knitwear designer and cocktail maker
Saturday, Apr 5, 1–4 PM
Thea Colman left advertising to raise her daughters. The new career she created combines her hobbies (knitting and cocktails) and justifies her favorite purchases (yarn and vintage glassware). Hence: BabyCocktails!
As a knitter, Thea prefers to imagine her own knits rather than follow someone else’s pattern. And that—at the urging of her friends—is how she became a full-fledged designer. Typically, her work features cables, lace, and motifs that look difficult (but aren’t!). Her patterns are known for the attention she pays to individual fit and for descriptive notes in the instructions that help knitters adapt their knits as they like. Of course, her patterns are named after cocktails. Follow her on Instagram @theacolman for knits and drinks or on Ravelry: BabyCocktails.
Presentation
Thea started her design career in 2008, when Ravelry was new on the scene. She now has 340 (!) designs on this platform. Her knitwear designs and the materials she has chosen over the past 17 years reflect industry changes, fashion trends, and social movements. As a result, she has more than a few fascinating tales to tell! Thea will also discuss the basics of bottom-up sweater construction. It’s one of her favorite methods, and she is happy to introduce more knitters to it and to the benefits it offers in garment design and construction. Thea is offering a generous 20% discount on her patterns on Ravelry (for the code members can check their email). The offer is valid between April 6 and 12.
