GUEST SPEAKER: Willie Smith, digital creator, designer, and knitting instructor (Zoom)

Willie Smith has 136 knitting videos to his name on YouTube. Nearly 160,000 (!) knitters follow him on Instagram. He is a featured teacher on Season 9 of Knit Stars. AND he is the guest speaker at our February general meeting, via Zoom. About knitting, Willie says: “I’ve yet to find an activity that has so many benefits and endless possibilities”. His positivity and enthusiasm for the craft shine through in every one of his quick (5 minutes or less!) videos. These mini lessons encourage us to challenge ourselves with techniques we might be a little afraid to try (em…hello, tubular cast-on!). The list of techniques he has taught includes: brioche, various cast-ons, decreases, gussets, heel flaps, mosaic knitting, and many more. You name it, he’s made a quick and easy-to-follow video for it. He has even taught a masterclass on yarn substitution!
Program

Willie will talk about his ten-year journey of knitting exploration and discovery, during which he learned everything he could about the craft of knitting (and fell in love with it) and also learned to teach others to love it. After the talk, Willie will demonstrate a very useful technique: the tubular cast-on. If you have been avoiding this technique, now is your chance to master it. Be sure to have large (US 11 to 13) needles and bulky to super bulky yarn at hand.
